Spice rack is a Peppercorn News series profiling different ANU student clubs and interviewing prominent committee members
By Adrian Lu
As much as we here love our peppercorns, variety is the spice of life. So in this series we’ll be exploring the various clubs ANU has to offer- from the comforting to the esoteric, everything has a place on the spice rack.
You’ll get to know the places fellow students are spending their time and who knows? Maybe you’ll find a flavour of club which’ll have you coming back for seconds.
Our inaugural Spice Rack visit is to a club that is easy to see the appeal of. They offer free food, friendly faces, and… socks?
Read on to be served a sermon by the so-called “Brunchfather” of ANU Brunch Society.
A: Interviewer
B: 'Brunch-father'
A: Let’s get the admin out of the way first. What are two things new members need to bring to attend brunch club?
B: Well, first thing to do is purchase a membership on Qpay. The other is to bring good vibes to chill and chat with other peeps! (Also don't forget to pick up and wear your society issued toe socks to each event!)
A: So it's pretty simple to get involved. Then let’s talk bigger. What would your club do with a $10,000 dollar budget?
B: With a $10 000 budget? Bouncy castle and paintball fight with the fanciest of brunch foods (including mimosas!). Do I need to say more? It would be rad (especially if everyone dressed up in fancy costumes).
A: That sounds like a blast (and makes me wish somebody would start a paintball club). Now here’s an equally fantastical question- which famous lawyer/person would you most want to have brunch with and why?
B: Saul Goodman. Personally I haven’t watched Better Call Saul, but I've heard he’s an interesting dude and would definitely draw lots of people's attention. For a more serious answer Erin Brockovich would be a cool person to have as she had a serious impact in America when it came to the law, despite not being a lawyer herself. I feel like we could learn quite a bit from her, plus I think her vibes would be top notch.
A: Interesting choices! But speaking of serious people, why should law students in particular choose your club?
B- Law students study some really serious and heavy material. They also kinda lack a life (that’s some friendly fire from a fellow law student), and the best way to fix that is with an ANUSA funded caffeine addiction plus some fun conversations.
A: And last but not least, what’s the best thing about Brunch Society?
B: Best thing about brunch society is how chill and unserious it is as well as the free food. Not every society needs a clear purpose, sometimes ones made just to vibe and socialise are great for the university experience.
And that’s a wrap! I hope you’ve learned plenty from this trip into the pantry, and if you’re extra keen to grab some free food* then check out the Brunch Society Facebook and sign up today!**
*Please note: Brunch Society only offers a free item under $8 dollars each brunch due to funding caps.
**There is also a membership fee of $6 (but if you ask me, that’s pretty good deal for free food under $8 multiple weeks during the semester)
